The huge volumes of gases generated and released by landfill sites has always been regarded as a major environmental problem but is currently recognised as an opportunity in the search for environmentally acceptable ways to generate 'green energy'.
Methane, which constitutes up to 60% of the gases generated inside a landfill mass, is a carbon gas rated over 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide in terms of its potential to add to global warming. As such its extraction and utilisation can offer dual benefits in the battle against climate change. Firstly in terms of the many millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas diverted from entering the atmosphere and secondly in terms of the conventional resources saved when it is used as an alternative fuel for power generation. The company is closely associated with projects to maximise the benefits of landfill gas utilisation, especially in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng where flaring and power generation projects are already in full operation.
